The dark side of the web: Telegram. Systematic Abuse, and a Broken Society

In the digital era, where information flows freely and connectivity bridges cultures, there are also dark corners that reveal the worst sides of humanity. The recent discovery of a Telegram channel with over 70,000 members, where explicit content and instructions on how to abuse and violate women were shared, is not just shocking news—it’s an urgent alarm demanding reflection on the cracks in our social fabric.

This event cannot be ignored or reduced to a mere media anecdote. It is a symptom of a much deeper problem that permeates our cultural, legal, and technological structures.

Impunity in the Digital Age: When Anonymity Protects the Abuser

Instant messaging platforms like Telegram have become essential tools for communication in a hyper-connected world. However, this same technology, designed to protect user privacy and security, has been exploited by groups with sinister intentions.

In this channel, thousands of users shared non-consensual images, detailed instructions on abusing women, and, most alarmingly, advice on avoiding detection. All this under the cloak of anonymity provided by these platforms.

The lack of effective regulation and the slow response from authorities allow such spaces to proliferate. While technology advances, laws and control mechanisms seem to lag behind.

The Roots of the Problem: Misogyny in Digital Culture

This incident is neither isolated nor recent. It is a symptom of a structural problem: deeply rooted misogyny in our society. These digital spaces are merely an extension of a culture that normalizes violence against women and the objectification of their bodies.

Impunity in these channels is not just due to the lack of action by authorities but also the silent complicity of a society that continues to perpetuate harmful gender stereotypes and roles.

From an early age, children are exposed to narratives where women are viewed as objects, where consent is minimized, and violence is justified. This deficient emotional education, combined with a culture of silence, creates adults who view these spaces not only as valid but as a “right.”

The Impact on Victims and Society: Invisible Scars

Behind every leaked image, behind every piece of advice on how to abuse a woman, there is a real victim. Women who have been violated, exposed, and publicly humiliated. But the damage goes far beyond the individual—it affects the social fabric as a whole.

The psychological and emotional consequences for victims are devastating. Often, facing public judgment can be even more painful than the act itself. Fear, shame, and guilt paralyze many women, preventing them from seeking justice or support.

At the same time, the existence of these spaces generates a perception of impunity that reinforces patterns of abuse. Every channel that remains active, every message that goes unreported, sends a clear message: abuse has no consequences.

The Solution Begins with Us: Actions for Change

Outrage is not enough. If we genuinely want to prevent such situations from recurring, we need structural change and a coordinated response among governments, digital platforms, and civil society.

Education and Prevention: It is essential to implement sexual and emotional education programs from an early age that teach about consent, respect, and empathy.

Digital Responsibility: Platforms must take an active role in monitoring and reporting such spaces.

Active Participation: Each of us has a role to play. Reporting these spaces, refusing to participate in them, and speaking openly about the problem are necessary actions.

The Role of Men: The fight against violence toward women is not exclusively their battle. Men have the responsibility to reflect on their role in this problem and become active allies.

Silence perpetuates impunity, and breaking it is the first step toward change.

The discovery of this channel is not just a scandalous headline; it reflects a society that continues to fail its women. But it’s also an opportunity to act, to learn, and to demand justice.

We cannot allow the fear of public scrutiny to silence victims. We cannot allow impunity to reign in the digital space. Each of us has a role to play in building a society where women can live, both in the real world and online, with security, respect, and dignity.

Because silence has never been, nor will ever be, the solution. Report. Educate. Act. Because change starts with you.
